Joshua was born in Belper, Derbyshire in 1842. He married Hannah Cheetham (born Milford, Derbyshire about 1843) at Belper Wesleyan Chapel in 1861.

Author's note - Belper Wesleyan Chapel is now Belper Methodist Church. It celebrated its bicentenary in 2007 and is an excellent example of Wesleyan Chapels of this period. When we visited Belper as part of our research, we were privileged to be allowed to see the interior of this chapel - this was a highlight of our visit to the area. John Wesley preached at a spot adjacent to this chapel.
