The Bailey / Sherburne ancestry of two United States presidents

Author's note:This represents some of the more speculative results of my researches. The main Bailey interests page gives Robert Bailey as my earliest ancestor on this line. It is possible to trace, in a more speculative way, the ancestral line of the Baileys rather further back. This is the basis of the Distant Cousins page.

My recent internet-based research into the ancestry of U.S. Presidents has shown that George Washington, first President of the United States of America was a descndant of Richard Bayly (1381 - 1441) who later adopted his wife's surname of Sherburne. The tree below of selected descendants of Richard Bayly illustrates that both George Washington and the much later president Franklin Delano Roosevelt were descendants of Richard Bayley.

Selected descendants of Richard Bayley

Agnes Tempest, granddaughter of Richard Bayly in the tree above was the wife of Sir William Calverley who in turn was the son of Walter Calverley. Walter was in turn the ancestor of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and of the more recent presidents George Bush Sr. and George Bush Jr. To look at this set of descendants click on the Calverley presidential descendants page link.
