The Calverley ancestry of three U.S. presidents

Author's note There are several websites where the ancestries of U.S. Presidents are described. I encountered some of these whilst "googling" for Calverley connections. I was surprised (to put it mildly!) to find that F. D. Roosevelt was a descendant of a Sir William Calverley. I have normally described my own Calverley ancestry only back to the mid 17th century when James Calverley married Mary Barber at Gawthorpe Hall. For details of this marriage click Distant Calverley ancestors page. However, I have encountered other researchers' work which would take our more distant still Calverley ancestors back into the Middle Ages. If this research is indeed true then our Calverleys are descended from the same ancestor as President Roosevelt. Further internet - based research showed that George Bush, father and son are descended from Sir William's parents. The chart below attempts to show how we might all descend from Walter Calverley and his wife Elizabeth Markinfield.

On a visit a few years ago to the USA, I found myself able to visit the FDR memorial in Washington DC. This is a picture of me paying my respects to the great man.

My later researches also revealed that Agnes Tempest, ancestress of Franklin D. Roosevelt herself shares a common ancestry with George Washington, first president of the United States of America. To look at this possible relationship click on the Sherburne link.
