The Capstick family of Dent

My wife's 3gt grandfather was Alexander Capstick, (1775 - 1854), farmer of Fairfield, Dent in the far North West of the old (pre-1974) West Riding of Yorkshire and now part of post-1974 Cumbria. To this day Dent is a remote and picturesque part of England.

Alexander married Agnass Mattinson, the daughter of Francis and Elizabeth Mattinson in 1803. They had seven children - three daughters and four sons.

Jane was born in 1804, the eldest child of Alexander and Agnass.

Barbara, born in 1806 was the second child of Alexander and Agnass. She married William Taylor.

John, born in 1808, was the third child and eldest son of Alexander and Agnass. He was an agricultural labourer who became a gardener in Lancaster, where there some of their descendants still live. John married Sarah Parrington in Dent in 1838. They had four sons and five daughters.

William, born in 1818 was a farmer at Deepdale in Dent. To the best of my knowledge he never married.

Francis, (1819 - 98) was a farmer at Parks, Deepdale, Dent for most of his life. he married Elizabeth Mitton at Horton-in-Ribblesdale in 1848. Francis and Elizabeth are my wife's gt gt granparents. Click here to read about the Mitton family. Click here to read about Francis and Elizabeth Capstick and their family.

James, born in 1822 was an agricultural labourer who lived with his wife and family at Blind Beck, Horton-in-Ribblesdale in the far North West of Yorkshire. His wife was called Elizabeth and they seem to have had nine children since their last three sons were called Septimus, Octavus and Nonus but up to now I have only been able to find eight of their children!.

Margaret born in 1825 was the youngest child of Alexander and Agnass. She married Robert Bentham, farmer of Willans, Dent. They did not have any known children.
