Robert was the second son of Thomas and Mary. He was a farm labourer and a quarryman locally in Longridge. He then joined Lancashire Constabulary in the Manchester area. His Police career was short lived and he returned to carting as his occupation. Whilst in Manchester he met and married Sarah Jones, originally from Dawley in Shropshire. After living and working in Warrington where others of Sarah's family had settled, Robert returned to Longridge then moved to Burnley where he became a flour carter.

Robert and Sarah had a son and two daughters. Their elder daughter Beatrice married Fred Cockayne and lived in Burnley. The son of Robert and Sarah, John Thomas was at first a flour carter in Burnley but horse drawn carts were replaced by lorries. He joined the Coldstream Guards in 1903 but was medically discharged a year later because he had cataracts of the eyes. In 1914, however, he was judged fit for military service and served in France during World War 1. After discharge from the Army as a sergeant in 1919 he returned to work as a carter. He eventually became foreman in the Highways department at Burnley. The youngest child of Robert and Sarah was Lily who married Harold Townely.
