The family of James and Ann Spencer

James and Ann Spencer had 5 sons and one daughter. One son, Arthur, died in infancy. Three of the surviving brothers became printers.

Their eldest son Frederick William was born in 1875 in Burnley. He died in 1960 in Deganwy, near Llandudno, North Wales. He married three times but never had any children. Like his father and two of his brothers he was a printer by trade.

Their second son was Ernest James, born in Burnley in 1877. He was the proprietor of Brun Printers in Burnley. He married Elizabeth Jane Hudson in 1902. They had a daughter, Phyllis, in 1914. She married William Smith and died, childless in 2002.

The third son of James and Ann Spencer was Charles Percival, my grandfather. To read about Charles and his family click here .

Nellie, the only daughter of James and Ann Spencer was born in 1881 in Burnley. She married James Sellers with whom she had two daughters and a son. One daughter, Renee, died in infancy. Their son, Frederick James lived his adult life in Rugby, Warwickshire. Their surviving daughter, Laura, married a local businessman Marcus Catterall and lived at Lancaster Gate in Nelson. There are living descendants of Marcus and Laura.

Cecil Herbert (or "Bertie" as he was always known) was born in Padiham in 1887. He spent most of his adult life in Newport in Monmouthshire where he worked for a firm called Uskside. He spent the last few months of his life in his native Lancashire at a nursing home in Simonstone, near Burnley. He was childless although he married twice.
