Joshua was the youngest surviving child of William and Jane Spencer.He was born in Park Terrace, Habergham Eaves, Burnley in 1861. He became an insurance agent, eventually becoming the assistant superintendent for the British Workman's Assurance Company.For much of his working life he lived on Carter Street in Burnley.
Joshua married twice. His first wife was Lavinia Crabtree whom he married in 1883 at Brunswick Methodist Chapel in Burnley. They had four children before Lavinia's death in 1889. The children were Harry, Herbert, Mabel and Fred. Only Harry and Mabel survived to adulthood.
Harry migrated to Montreal in Canada after he married Anne Jane Staveley at St. John the Baptist, Gannow, in Burnley.They had a son called Harry.
Mabel married Thomas Henry McWhinney in Holy Trinity, Burnley in 1909. There are living descendants from this marriage.
Joshua's second marriage was in 1891 at St. Peter's Church in Burnley to Mary Wilkinson.They had 6 children all of whom survived to adulthood.
Joshua died in 1928 at Barden Lane, Burnley.
