The Ancestry of William and Mary Mitton
William's ancestry
(Chart created using Family historian v.5)
William was the fifth child of eleven and the third son of Robert Mitton and his wife Jane (nee Blenkhorn). William was baptised in Wensley, North Yorkshire in 1791. In later census records he gives his birthplace as Leyburn in 1791. In 1813 William and Mary married at Hubberholme near Buckden, North Yorkshire.
William farmed at Nether Lodge. to the north-east of Horton-in-Ribblesdale and east of the hamlet of Selside. To this day Nether Lodge is quite remote. Whilst at Nether Lodge William was widowed in 1848. Atsome time during the 1850's William left Nether Lodge and moved to Town End Farm, Horton-in-Ribblesdale. William eventually died at Brackenbottom, Horton-in-Ribblesdale in 1879. He was buried at Chapel-le-Dale near the Ribblesdale railway viaduct. The churchyard ar Chapel-le-dale is very "overcrowded" with the bodies of workers killed in the construction of the viaduct.
William's father Robert was born in 1759 near Buckden and was baptised in November 1759 at Hubberholme. He was at different times a farmer and farm labourer. In 1782 he married Jane Blenkhorn at Kirkby Lonsdale. Jane was descended from the Thistlethwaite family of Dent, This family was intensively investigated by an online group of interested amateur genealogists including me that was led by Brian Davey who collated our efforts into an invaluable record on CD.
Jane died in 1822. Robert lived until 1833 when he died at Tops, Horton-in-Ribblesdale.
Robert was the sixth of eleven children and the fourth son born to Joseph Mitton and his wife Mary Wilkinson. In some more dedicated Mitton family history websites Joseph is identified as "Squire" Mitton and it is from him that the North American branches of the family have a common descent.
In the chart we now see that Joseph's ancestors stretch back in a line of Mittons in Starbotton, near Kettlewell until we come to Roger (1603 - 84). His parents are then given by some sources as the son of Richard and Elizabeth Mitton.
Mary's ancestry
(Chart created using Family historian v.5)
Mary's ancestry has not been traced back as many generations as that of her husband but on all her lines we get back to about 1700. Her paternal ancestry goes back to farming stock in the Hawes area and Arncliffe before that whilst her mother's ancestors were from Dent - the information about these ancestors yet again came from Brian Davey's compilation.
